Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam, commemorating the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from food, drink, and other physical needs, as a way to purify the body and soul. The fast is also a time for increased prayer, reflection, and charity. Each day of Ramadan ends with a meal called Iftar, and the pre-dawn meal before the fast begins is called Suhoor. Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, depending on the lunar calendar, and culminates in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festive holiday marking the end of the fast.
